2016 - November Calendar

For the month of November, during which we commemorate Coronation Day (November 1), we are proud to present this immensely moving photograph taken during His Majesty's trek across the beautiful, harsh, high-altitude regions of Lunana.

In this photograph, His Majesty crosses a wooden bridge over a river that has its source in the glacial lakes near Tsendagang (6960 m), the magnificent white peak visible in the backdrop. Autumn colours illuminate the landscape, which is as difficult as it is stunning, and turns increasingly hostile as the trail climbs up to the high mountain passes.

During the Royal Tour, His Majesty met the people of Lunana spread across the region, who eke out a living in these inaccessible parts of Bhutan. As we celebrate the Birth Anniversary of His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo on November 11, it is apt that we reflect on Drukgyal Zhipa's farsighted vision to legalize the collection of cordyceps, and regulate it so that the maximum benefit goes to the highland communities. The collection of this extremely valuable fungus has had a discernible impact on the resilient highland people, enabling them to greatly improve their income and standard of living.

Besides meeting with the people, His Majesty also visited the glaciers and glacial lakes in Lunana, which are the source of our major rivers. The visit reflects His Majesty's deep concerns about the various threats posed due to the risk of glacial lake outburst floods– a result of climate change on the fragile, moraine-dammed lakes.

His Majesty's reign has been marked by everlasting and tireless concern for the wellbeing of the people of Bhutan, which shines through brilliantly from His Majesty's travels across all parts of Bhutan– heedless of landscapes, weather, or time.

As we commemorate Coronation Day, on behalf of all the Bhutanese people, we offer all our love and wishes to our beloved King. May the people of Bhutan be forever blessed with the protection of His Majesty's benevolent reign.
